[12 January 2014]
ICASA received proposals from mobile network operators (MNOs) to change how SMS messages are priced. Currently, MNOs follow a “Sender Keeps All” (SKA) system, but the proposals introduce a termination rate. ICASA understands the need to adapt to new ideas, but worries about how this change might affect the entire SMS industry. This includes existing SMS services, companies that provide them, and even potential job losses.
Therefore, ICASA is holding a workshop to discuss the impact of termination rates on SMS. They want to hear from the industry on:
- What services depend on SMS?
- How much does it cost to deliver an SMS?
- Does it matter if the message goes to a phone or a landline?
This workshop will help ICASA decide whether to approve the proposed changes.
The workshop is scheduled for the week of January 20th, 2014, according to ICASA.
