The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has released its final plan for allocating spectrum in the 2300-2400 MHz band, used for mobile broadband services.

Of the available spectrum, 40 MHz (from 2360 to 2400 MHz) has been made available for new mobile network services. The remaining 60 MHz is currently held by Telkom.

ICASA has opened public comment on ten draft radio frequency spectrum assignment plans (RFSAPs).

Written submissions regarding all of the above must be received by 4:00 PM on Friday, May 20, 2022. Please email them to Mr. Manyaapelo Richard Makgotlho at rmakgotlho@icasa.org.za, with a copy to jdikgale@icasa.org.za.

Each draft outlines ICASA’s intention to allocate the bands to IMT services and includes details on the channelling plan, implementation provisions, and the procedure for radio frequency migration.

Once finalized, an RFSAP outlines the categories of use for spectrum in a band and the applicable technical parameters.
