[16 October 2017]

ICASA has revived an earlier initiative to establish a 5G forum for discussing 5G technology and related standards. The regulator has released draft terms of reference for the forum and an agenda for its inaugural meeting, scheduled to take place in Johannesburg on November 1st and 2nd, 2017.

Terms of Reference of the 5G Forum
Agenda of the first meeting of the 5G Forum 1-2 Nov 2017

Under the terms of reference, the 5G Forum is established to:

  1. Assist ICASA in preparing contributions for meetings of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) concerning 5G and other relevant standards bodies.
  2. Ensure that these contributions are well-informed and reflect South Africa’s specific requirements.
  3. Serve as an advisory body rather than an executive committee, meaning it will not undertake management responsibilities and will maintain an objective and independent stance.

The Forum’s scope of work includes:

  1. Identifying the requirements and capabilities of various use cases in the 5G era.
  2. Collecting and analyzing information on potential frequency bands for future 5G applications.
  3. Engaging in international cooperation through Memoranda of Understanding with similar global forums focused on 5G.
  4. Preparing for participation in the ITU-R 5G workshop tentatively scheduled for the first quarter of 2017.
  5. Acting as a platform to recognize and identify South African innovations that could benefit from standardization.
