[June 2011]

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has released a discussion paper outlining its plan to unbundle the “local loop,” which is the physical connection between homes and businesses and the telephone network. This move could increase competition and potentially lower prices for consumers. However, it’s important to be realistic. Telkom, the dominant telecommunications provider, has indicated they are not eager to give up control of this infrastructure. So, while LLU’s revival is a positive step, significant progress might take time.
